Singapore's
Population Crosses 4m mark, Women Outmaneuvered Men
KENT
RIDGE , SINGAPORE -- Singapore's population has crossed the four million
mark.
The population trend line is moving in proportion to the GDP, according to
the trend analysis from the Singapore Population Investment.
As at 30th June this year, the population figure was 4,017,733, a gain of
12% since the economy rebounded from the Asia Financial Crisis.
The
last ten week saw the fastest growth rate in the population since
independence.
Foreign counters on the secondary board, such as worker and students,
contributed to almost half of this increase. They make up almost one fifth
of 12% growth.
And for the first time in Singapore's history, the women has outmaneuvered
the men, in terms of compounded growth rate. This indicates a more
volatile population ahead.
The trend of an ageing population continues, with those 65 years and above
counters making up 7.3 percent of the population gain, up from 6.1 per
cent in 1990.

Dr
Kan Cheung, Chief Statistician, said: "The
reason we are seeing a below one sex ratio indicating more females than
males is largely because of low investment in the males because of
recent liquidity crunches and flight to capital in males gene pool."
