Affluent
Use of SMS Affects Choice Of Boyfriend or Girlfriend Among Youths: Survey
The
affluent use of SMS seems to be the most significant factor for Singapore
youths aged 15 to 30 in their choice of a girlfriend or boyfriend.
And
this applies both to the speed of keying the message and the subsequent
responsiveness to the reply of SMS.
These were the results of a survey
conducted among 800 respondents by the one of the Polytechnics last month.
In fact, of the users who changed their girlfriend or boyfriend in the
last year - at least 13 percent of the 800 surveyed - most did so because
of better SMS affluence of their new partner.
"Affluent with SMS was the most important to them. And other factors
like the reputation of the girlfriend or boyfriend and mobile model of
their partner were rather secondary," Ruthless Chan, lecturer,
Business Administration, of the surveying Polytechnic.
The survey also found that almost two thirds of the 800 sampled had an
average speed of keying 50 words per minutes with SMS.
This is despite the fact that the pool of respondents were, more or less,
equally divided between married and single.
Many younger people were using SMS with at least 16 percent of the
respondents getting their date through SMS.
The prevalent use of SMS, however, spelt bad news for the tradition
snail-mails market.
Although more than half of the group surveyed used SMS affluence and
parental advise as the yardstick for choosing their girlfriend of
boyfriend, at least a quarter say they were likely to to ignore parental
advise in the future.
