Money is not the most important thing for Asia-Pacific consumers, but credit card is: survey

SHELTON WAY, SINGAPORE -- Money is not the most important thing in life for consumers in the Asia-Pacific region, but their credit card is, according to a survey commissioned by a credit card company.

The survey showed that traditional values such as families and even money no longer hold sway as credit card and 'dot-coming everything' top the list of priorities.

Some 5,500 consumers in 13 Asia Pacific markets, including China, India, Philippines and Singapore, who are eligible for credit cards were asked what is the most important thing in life for them.

Forty-five percent ranked 'Credit card' as the most important thing in life, while 'Dot-coming our life' with 22 percent and 'Kiasu-ism' with 19 percent, took second and third place.

Only five percent of the respondents cited 'Family' as their choice.

When asked what they would do if they had an extra hour each day, almost half (47 percent) reported that they would use it to brainstorm new dot-com domain name for registration purpose, while about one-third (36 percent) would spend time on devising plan to grab a sit on a crowed MRT train.

However, the survey revealed that Asians do not share their credit card.

Seven in 10 donate less than one percent of their salary or nothing at all every month to charity. Some even hate the idea of donating to some charity organizations that will use part of the proceed for its administrative purpose.

The recent economic crisis was cited as a possible reason why consumers are so careful with their money

Ronald McDonald, Senior Vice-President, Craps Survey International, said: "It's a representation of the maturity in Asia-Pacific. Generally the population, they understand that credit card is important and so is funding their credit card bill. You can buy health-care with credit card but that does not address the primary need of funding your credit card bill. Thus, registering unused dot-com domain name and selling it to others will generate some cash-flow to support their credit card activities."
